Be Prepared

Heading to college is exciting, and a little preparation goes a long way. Along with your essentials, consider bringing a basic medicine and first aid kit so you’re ready for the unexpected.

Requirements for New Students

Before arriving on campus, there are a few important health requirements to complete.

View Requirements
Immunizations

Virginia law requires all first-time, full-time students to submit documentation of required immunizations, including meningitis. Records must be signed by a licensed healthcare provider and submitted before registration.

Immunization Requirements
Physical Exams

Physicals are not required for all students. Student-athletes should consult Athletics for specific requirements.

If you enroll before age 18, a parent or guardian must complete and sign required consent and medical forms before you can receive non-emergency care.

Care That Supports You

Your health and well-being are essential to your success. Whether you’re feeling sick, managing a condition, or staying proactive about your health, we’re here to support you.

We provide a range of services to care for you when you’re sick and help you stay healthy:

  • Physicals
  • Sick visits
  • Injury care
  • Lab services (including rapid strep, flu tests, and blood draws)
  • Stitch and staple removal
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Allergy shots

Health and Wellness Services does not bill insurance for on-campus clinic visits. If you are referred for off-campus care, such as imaging, lab work, or specialist visits, those providers will bill you or your insurance directly.

Because healthcare is an important part of your overall success, we strongly encourage all students to carry health insurance. Many students remain covered under a parent or guardian’s plan until age 26, and many providers offer options for students living away from home.

Students are responsible for managing and administering their own medications, including injections. The clinic does not store prescription or controlled medications. Several pharmacies are conveniently located near campus for prescription services.

Your privacy matters. In accordance with HIPAA regulations, all medical information is kept strictly confidential. We will never release any information to anyone, including your parents, guardians, faculty, staff, coach, or other medical professionals, without your written consent.

Health records are maintained for six years after graduation, after which they are securely destroyed.

Clinic fees are collected at the time of service and are designed to remain affordable and accessible for students.
